CNN  U.S. Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean, the main suspect in the killing of a 20-year-old pregnant Marine, has been captured in Mexico three months after fleeing.

When asked by a Mexican reporter whether he’d killed Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, he replied, “I loved her”.

Mexican authorities arrested Laurean Thursday in San Juan Vina, in Michoacan, after he approached a roadblock set up by the local anti-kidnapping task force.

Laurean, gave authorities his real name, which was entered into a criminal database that alerted authorities to his fugitive status. Police said Laurean was calm and gave no resistance.

He told police he had been sleeping in avocado groves and eating the fruit from the trees.

Daily Mail  Metro police are to be microchipped in a bid to better enable the brass to track their movements.

The new system is meant to replace the current Airwaves radio system which has proven to be unreliable according to Police Review magazine.

The Automated Personal Location System means that officers will never be out of the range of their supervising officers.

Although police chiefs say the new technology is about ‘improving officer safety’ and reacting to incidents more quickly, many rank and file believe it is just a Big Brother style system to keep tabs on them and make sure they don’t ‘doze off on duty’.

MSNBC  A 15 year old boy died from a rare form of lymphoma that wasn’t discovered until after his death.  His parent’s donated his organs, thinking that they were giving he gift of life.

Alex Koehne’s parents were told he was dying of bacterial meningitis, so when he passed, his parents didn’t hesitate to donate his organs.  It wasn’t discovered until a month later after the autopsy that the boy had in fact had cancer.

Since receiving the organs, four people have developed cancer.  Two of the four have died from the same rare form of lymphoma as Alex Koehne had.  The two that received his kidneys have since had them removed and are receiving cancer treatment.

This revelation has forced two hospitals to revise their transplant policies, though doctors insist that the chances of contracting cancer from a donor organ are extremely rare.  Studies show that only 64 cases have come to light in 230,000 studied.

MacLean’s Magazine  According to the article posted in MacLean’s magazine this week, complaining to your MP will not fix any issues with your student loans here in Canada.

National Student Loan Service Company is a private American company.  Don’t hope for improved service, and in fact, be aware that not only is your personal information now in American hands, it’s also being utilized under the Patriot Act as well.

Our student loans program has passed through 3 different corporations. In May 2007, the Resolve Corporation, a subsidiary of an American company called First Service, bought EDULINX (the student loan program) for $13 million, plus a percentage of future revenues until March 2008, according to their press release. While Resolve doesn’t have the same dubious background as Nelnet, it is not without its own problems. Resolve is paid on a per-loans-in-repayment basis, meaning that the longer they keep students in debt, the more money they make. This pits their private interest — making money — in direct conflict with their ostensible mandate — assisting students by effectively administering loans.

Don’t hope for improvements anytime soon folks.  This company owns our loans until 2013.  Students will have to push for a new system when the current contract comes due.

Daily Mail  A man who received a heart transplant ended his life in almost exactly the same way as the donor, and leaves the same widow grieving.

Sonny Graham began writing to the donor’s widow after finding out who his donor was.  12 years after the successful transplant, the wife was widowed for the second time in strikingly similar circumstances.

Mr. Graham was found dead in his garage after shooting himself in the throat with shotgun.

His donor had taken his life with a shot to the head.

Scientists say that there are more than 70 documented cases on record of personality changes after transplants where the recipients take on personality traits of the donors.

AOL News  A polygamous compound with hundreds of children was raided.  Child welfare officials say that girls were married to much older men upon reaching puberty, while boys were groomed to do the same.

Many women and children have spoken of a life isolated from the rest of the world.

The investigation was triggered by hushed phone calls from a 16 year old pregnant girl saying that her husband had beated and raped her.

Women and children wearing pioneer type clothing were rounded up and removed from the 1700 acre Texas ranch this week.  Children were taken into temporary custody and placed in foster care.

Barbara’s Blog  On April 1 truckers took the strongest action so far in their protest of rising fuel costs in the US:  inaction.

Faced with $4/gallon diesel fuel, they slowed down, shut down and started honking. On the New Jersey Turnpike, a convoy of trucks stretching “as far as the eye can see,” according to a turnpike spokesman, drove at a glacial 20 mph. Outside of Chicago, they slowed and drove three abreast, blocking traffic and taking arrests. They jammed into Harrisburg PA; they slowed down the Port of Tampa where 50 rigs sat idle in protest. Near Buffalo, one driver told the press he was taking the week off “to pray for the economy.”

The Telegraph  Swiss scientists have come up with a lightning fast replacement for the internet as we now know it.

The new version of the internet would allow music and movies to be downloaded in seconds.  It could also offer, real time video phone calls for the price of a local call, instant online gaming with thousands of players, and the power necessary to send sophisticated images.

It’s called grid technology, and will be unlocked this summer with the switching on of the Large Hedron Collider, a new particle accelerator designed to help scientists understand how the universe began.

London Free Press  A complaint to police alleges that investigators from Human Rights used a woman’s wireless Internet connection to log on to white supremacist websites and make postings to chat groups without her knowledge or consent.

The complaint to the RCMP and Ottawa police was made by a Toronto resident, who runs a website that has been the subject of a long-standing hate case before the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Among other things, Lemire’s complaint alleges that the investigators breached sections of the Criminal Code by “wilfully and with malicious intent” using the woman’s connection without authorization and “committed theft of telecommunication service.” The website, freedomsite.org, became the subject of a commission hearing in 2003.

An interesting news cast on a haunted police station…for real.  Video can be found here.

This Youtube video shows a nice little scam.  Jiffy Lube was charging for work that was never done.  KNBC catches the whole thing on tape.
